I would like to introduce you to my 2nd great-grandparents Rob Faulkner and Rosa Ann Miller, former slaves who were born in Garrard County, Kentucky during the 1840's.  This blog will feature topics on this couple, some of their descendants, and my attempts to uncover their ancestors through genetic genealogy.

The Couple

Robert Faulkner was born March 1840 in Garrard County, Kentucky.  He also went by Rob or Bob, and his last name is variably spelled Falkner or Faulkner. Identity of his parents is being investigated by the author.  He died 17 July 1904 in Flatwood, Garrard County, Kentucky and was laid to rest in the Old Paint Lick Cemetery. [1] [2] [3]

Rosa Ann Miller was born 20 August 1842 at "Frank Moran's Place" in Garrard County, Kentucky.  Her name also appears as Rosann or Rose Ann. According to the unnamed informant on her death certificate, her parents were William Miller and Celia Estle. She died 15 May 1913 in Garrard County, and was laid to rest 17 May 1913 in Paint Lick. [4]

Robert and Rose Ann began living as man and wife during slavery around 1859. Kentucky law did not originally allow slaves to marry. But in 1866, the Kentucky legislature recognized pre-existing unions of slave couples and permitted them to declare their marriage before the county court clerk. On 30 December 1874, Robert and Rose Ann did so before the court clerk of Garrard County and made their union official. [1] [5] [6]

Military Service

We know from his cemetery marker that Robert was a military veteran of the Civil War, serving in Company D of the 12th Regiment, U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery.  His service records state he enlisted for 3 years on 21 July 1864 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky, age 24, standing 5' 8".  They list his reputed owner as John Walker which informs us Robert joined to obtain freedom from slavery as provided by act of Congress.  He served through the end of the war, but spent several months in a Louisville post hospital after falling seriously ill serving sentry duty. [26] [27] [28]

Following the end of the war, Bob, as he was frequently called, returned to Garrard County and established a home on a farm with Rosa Ann and his first two children, ultimately growing their family to the ten mentioned above.  Pension records reveal that his ongoing health was impaired by the wartime illness, long after the conflict ended.
